Color Scheme
The basic color scheme uses a dark gray (or maybe dark-gray-blue) background with a light text color. Need to figure out accent colors, maybe an orange based on the color of a negative film strip?
Example Number 1
This is a paragraph with background color #223355, foreground color #de7532. The link color is set to #fff with a hover color of #f66.
This is a longer paragraph to show how the color scheme works with
a lot more text. Also, there is a small image on the left of this
paragraph for illustrative purposes. This helps visualize how an
image looks when using this color scheme. The image used is 20100909-140712.
The orange of a film strip may be too dark for a lot of text. Try a brighter color, which becomes more like a yellow.
Example Number 2
This is a paragraph with background color #223355, foreground color #fd9. The link color is set to #fff with a hover color of #f66.

Maybe a slightly brighter blue for the background?
Example Number 3
This is a paragraph with background color #334466, foreground color #fd9. The link color is set to #fff with a hover color of #f66.

This is starting to look like something. Interestingly, with the background a little bit brighter, the text looks a bit paler. The contrast should still be fine, though.
Make the background color 85% of the previous one... closer to the original background color.
Example Number 4
This is a paragraph with background color #2b3956, foreground color #fd9. The link color is set to #fff with a hover color of #f66.

I think this is a good starting point for the color scheme.
